Learning Journal 2

After reading the We Are Data I was able to connect previous information I already knew. So Google actually uses your data to not only make your online experience better, but their service better. This is how we get crash reports and other stuff that can help Google run efficiently. Now of course this has also been used as they say in the reading "historical data to reinforce decisions." Have you ever visited a website and saw the same ad for that website on google. That is because if you are using Chrome, it tracks your website data to generate ads catered towards you. If you notice you can actually click the top right corner of google ads and request to not see those ads anymore. The amount of data and algorthims they were explaining in the reading are real things and can be used to track you. Now it is very hard for many hackers to pick up your sensitive information with new advancements in security on Google's Chrome browser. I wish the article would have explained how the rise of Google Chrome was the way Google really started being able to collect data.

For my personal use, I am careful on which sites I allow to share my cookies with. Honestly, I knew a lot of this information because I am a computer nerd. So I am already careful as it is, but this article actually gave me a better way to explain to my family the dangers of surfing the web. Nothing will be changing with my personal use though.

For my professional use, I always use the resources that I am provided by my employer. I will not use secure company information on social media, even in text chats. iMessages are encrypted end-to-end and other social media platforms do not have this encryption. Talking about company passwords, ideas, and other sensitive information may get leaked if the social media platform is hacked.

  1. Hi Edward! I was very intrigued by your post because my brother is also a computer nerd but isn’t as safe as you are with his online habits. It was also nice to see someone addressing concerns I myself have shared with my family and friends many times, and providing context to those concerns and why they are valid. I have always been strict about my posting habits but this definitely makes me consider no longer posting at all.
